Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs
2007 Legislative Agenda
The Vermont Legislature started a new two year session with
their arrival in Montpelier on January 3rd. As always, there are
familiar and new faces in the ranks of our elected officials.
The Federation agenda for this biennium will have the constant
factors of protecting the rights of gun ownership/shooting, hunting,
fishing and trapping.
We will act to not only protect but also expand the best interests
of participants in these activities. We will introduce and support
bills introduced that conforms our agenda and oppose proposed
legislation which conflicts with it.
We can project the need to act in the matters of perennial
issues, but are prepared to react to critical issues as they arise.
At the start of the 2007-2008 Legislative Session, the Federation
in general will work with the legislature and Vermont F&W to:
- pursue the improvement of activities and lands for use by all
Vermonters, but with a specific focus on hunting, fishing and
trapping;
- increase the opportunities and facilities for the shooting sports;
- work to expand the use of state lands and facilities for the
shooting sports, with a particular focus on shooter/hunter
safety and proficiency.
Recognizing the best way to attain safe and skilled adults is
by the proper training of our youth, we will work to train our
future outdoors men & women and shooters.
Specifically the Federation will:
- act to protect, and as possible, extend the Vermont
Sportsmen’s Bill of Rights, 24 VSA Section 2295;
-
support legislation, policy and regulation for managing wildlife
resources and property on the basis of a well reasoned and
objective review in the pursuit of sound public policy - science
and not emotion must be the standard to be used on these
important matters;
- support the improvement of the access opportunities for public
use of state owned property by:
- the improvement of state water access sites;
- the improvement of the management of State lands, such as
Wildlife Management Areas;
- promote investigation of expanded property tax incentives for
lands managed and made available for hunting, shooting, fishing
and trapping.
