Northfield Junior Rifles

The Northfield Junior Rifles (NJR) were started in 1947 by the Northfield Adult Rifle Team and since that time the team has continuously competed in NRA matches.

The number of members in the Northfield Junior Rifles (NJR) has ranged from 60, to 15 or 20 members. The NJR have members from 9 years old, to as high as the high school seniors.

The NJR currently competes in NRA regional and sectionals as well as USA shooting in Junior Olympic matches. The NJR hosts all the NRA and USA small-bore indoor matches for juniors in the state.

The NJR also hosts open matches for adult shooters and competes in small bore (.22), precision air rifles and also sporter air rifles (under 7 pounds). NJR younger shooters compete in a 5 meter BB gun program that gives them instructions in 4-position shooting with a gun that weighs 4 pounds.

NJR is a school sanctioned team in which the coach is paid a salary and insurance is provided for the team. NJR does not receiving funding from the school budget, instead NJR raises all of its own revenues.

NJR air rifles are approved for NRA match competition and modifications to the air rifles were that were supported by NRA grants. This funding was made available by the profits of Vermont's six Friends of the NRA Banquets. The Northfield Junior Rifles have Jack Baroffio, Doug Taft, Gary Sanders, Jeff Young, Jim Roux and Chris White as its adult instructors.

All contact information should be sent to Jack Baroffio (485-3311) or Doug Taft (485-7848). You my send email to Doug Taft (taftdev@excite.com).
