Federation Position on Town of Essex Ordinance Review The recent death of Saint Michael's College Emeritus Professor John Reiss, who was killed in an accidental shooting on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, was a truly tragic event. The family and friends of the late John Reiss have certainly endured a profound loss. As a result of this tragedy the Town of Essex is reviewing its firearm discharge ordinance. The federation encourages the review process to be a reasoned inquiry and not an emotional reaction to this terrible loss. Governmental actions taken in emotionally charged situations too often create results that are poor public policy. Sound public policy is best established with deliberate reason.
